Bar Graphs and Pictographs — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Blue has 8 symbols with a key of 5. Blue represents 40 votes.
Each symbol stands for 5 votes, so 8 symbols mean 8 x 5 = 40 votes for Blue.
2. Blue (8 symbols) beats Green (3 symbols) by 25 votes when each symbol equals 5.
Blue's 8 symbols equal 8 x 5 = 40 and Green's 3 symbols equal 3 x 5 = 15. Subtracting, 40 - 15 = 25 more votes.
3. On a bar graph, Tigers shows 25 and Wolves shows 10. The difference is 15.
On a bar graph you can read each bar's height directly. 25 - 10 = 15, so Tigers has 15 more than Wolves.
4. Lions (15) + Tigers (25) + Bears (20) + Wolves (10) = 70 animals in total.
Add the four bar heights together: 15 + 25 + 20 + 10 = 70 animals altogether.
5. Cookies (7 symbols, key=2) totals 14.
When the key is 2, every symbol counts as 2 cookies. 7 symbols give 7 x 2 = 14 cookies.
6. Cakes have 6 symbols and Brownies have 4 symbols (key=2). Cakes have 4 more.
Cakes have 6 x 2 = 12 and Brownies have 4 x 2 = 8. The gap is 12 - 8 = 4 more cakes.
7. On a bar graph where each grid line equals 10, a bar at the fourth line shows 40.
Each grid line is worth 10, so a bar that reaches the fourth line shows 4 x 10 = 40.
8. If Pens have 5 symbols and Pencils have 9 symbols (key=2), they total 28 items together.
Pens equal 5 x 2 = 10 and Pencils equal 9 x 2 = 18. Together they make 10 + 18 = 28 items.
9. In a pictograph, the category with the fewest symbols has the lowest total.
Fewer symbols means fewer groups of the key value, so the row with the fewest symbols always shows the lowest total.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
8 symbols, key = 2
→ 16
6
5 symbols, key = 5
→ 25
70
7 symbols, key = 10
→ 70
25
3 symbols, key = 2
→ 6
16
Multiply the number of symbols by the key for each pair: 8 x 2 = 16, 5 x 5 = 25, 7 x 10 = 70, and 3 x 2 = 6, which matches each item to its total.
