Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A pictograph shows Trucks = 6 symbols and Cars = 9 symbols (key = 3). Cars total 27.
The Cars row has 9 symbols and each symbol stands for 3 cars, so multiply 9 times 3 to get a total of 27 cars.
2. Using the same data, Cars outnumber Trucks by 9.
Cars total 9 times 3 = 27 and Trucks total 6 times 3 = 18, so subtracting 27 minus 18 shows Cars outnumber Trucks by 9.
3. A bar graph shows March = 40, April = 55, May = 35. The rainiest month is April.
The rainiest month is the one with the highest value, and 55 is greater than both 40 and 35, so April had the most rain.
4. Using the same bar graph, March and May together had 75 rainy days.
Add the two months' values together: March's 40 plus May's 35 equals 75 rainy days in total.
5. A pictograph shows Roses = 5 symbols, Tulips = 8 symbols (key = 4). Tulips minus Roses equals 12.
Tulips have 8 times 4 = 32 and Roses have 5 times 4 = 20, so 32 minus 20 leaves a difference of 12 flowers.
6. On a bar graph, Swim = 20, Run = 45, Bike = 30. The three sports total 95 students.
Add the three bars together to find every student counted: 20 plus 45 plus 30 equals 95.
7. A pictograph with a key of 10 shows 4 full symbols and one half symbol. That equals 45.
Four full symbols stand for 4 times 10 = 40, and a half symbol means half of 10 = 5, so 40 plus 5 gives 45.
8. A bar graph shows Jan = 50 and Jun = 25. January is 2 times as many as June.
To compare with multiplication, divide the larger value by the smaller: 50 divided by 25 equals 2, so January has twice as many as June.
9. If Cats = 7 symbols and Birds = 3 symbols (key = 5), their combined total is 50.
Add the symbols first to get 7 plus 3 = 10 symbols, then multiply by the key value of 5 to get a combined total of 50.
