Line Plots — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
On a Grade 3 half-inch line plot, the scale jumps by whole inches only.
Corrected: On a Grade 3 half-inch line plot, the scale jumps by half inches.
Half-inch line plots in Grade 3 use a scale that increases by one half inch each step.
2. Fix the sentence:
A pencil that is 4 and one half inches sits above 4 on a Grade 3 line plot.
Corrected: A pencil that is 4 and one half inches sits above 4.5 on a Grade 3 line plot.
A 4 1/2 inch pencil is plotted above 4.5, the half-inch tick on the Grade 3 scale.
3. Fix the sentence:
On a Grade 3 line plot, two pencils of the same length get one X mark together.
Corrected: On a Grade 3 line plot, two pencils of the same length get two X marks stacked.
Every pencil is one piece of data, so two pencils make two X marks stacked above the value.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. On a Grade 3 line plot of pencil lengths, 3 pencils are 4.5 inches, so there are 3 X marks above 4.5.
Three pencils at 4.5 inches each get an X, making 3 X marks above 4.5 on the Grade 3 line plot.
2. A Grade 3 line plot shows pencils: 4, 4.5, 4.5, 5, 5, 5, 5.5, 6. The total number of pencils is 8.
There are 8 values listed, so 8 X marks appear on the Grade 3 line plot.
3. On a Grade 3 half-inch line plot, the lengths 5, 5, 5, 5 mean the mode is 5 inches.
The value 5 appears four times, more than any other length, so 5 is the mode.
4. On a Grade 3 line plot, 2 pencils are 4 inches and 4 pencils are 4.5 inches. There are 2 more pencils at 4.5 inches.
4 minus 2 equals 2, so 2 more pencils are 4.5 inches than 4 inches on the Grade 3 line plot.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. On a Grade 3 half-inch line plot, the scale can include 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, and 6.
True False
A half-inch Grade 3 line plot scale includes whole and half values like 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6.
2. On a Grade 3 line plot, a 5.5 inch pencil should be marked above 5.
True False
A 5.5 inch pencil belongs above the 5.5 tick, not above 5, on a Grade 3 line plot.
3. Each pencil measured to the nearest half inch gets its own X mark on a Grade 3 line plot.
True False
Each measured pencil is a single piece of data, so it gets one X on a Grade 3 line plot.
