Perimeter and Area — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A yard is 12 m long and 8 m wide. To build a fence around it, you need 40 m of fencing.
Fencing wraps around the outside of the yard, so add all four sides: 12 + 8 + 12 + 8 = 40 m. The two long sides and two short sides together make 40 m of fencing.
2. A floor is 9 feet by 5 feet. You need 45 square foot tiles to cover it.
Each square foot tile covers 1 square foot, and the floor's area is 9 × 5 = 45 square feet. So 45 tiles fill the whole space exactly.
3. A picture frame is square with 4-inch sides. The frame edge is 16 inches around.
A square has four equal sides, so the edge around it is 4 × 4 = 16 inches. Adding all four 4-inch sides gives the same answer.
4. A poster is 7 cm tall and 3 cm wide. Its area is 21 square cm.
Area means rows times columns of square units, so 7 × 3 = 21 square cm. The poster covers 21 little 1 cm squares of space.
5. A pool is 10 m long and 6 m wide. A walkway around the edge is 32 m long.
A walkway around the edge follows the perimeter, which is 10 + 6 + 10 + 6 = 32 m. Two long sides plus two short sides make 32 m total.
6. A square sandbox has 5 ft sides. Its area is 25 square ft.
All four sides of a square sandbox are 5 ft, so the area is 5 × 5 = 25 square ft. That counts how many 1-foot squares fit inside.
7. A table is 11 inches long and 3 inches wide. Its perimeter is 28 inches.
Perimeter adds every side once: 11 + 3 + 11 + 3 = 28 inches. Each pair of equal sides contributes 22 and 6, which sum to 28.
8. A blanket is 4 m wide and 6 m long. Its area is 24 square m.
Multiplying length by width gives 6 × 4 = 24 square m of blanket. Each square meter is one 1 m by 1 m patch covering the floor.
9. A bookmark is 9 cm long and 2 cm wide. Its perimeter is 22 cm.
Going around the bookmark means adding 9 + 2 + 9 + 2 = 22 cm. The two long sides total 18 and the two short sides total 4, making 22.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Fence around 7 m × 3 m yard
→ 20 m
22 cm
Tiles for 6 m × 6 m floor
→ 36 square m
36 square m
Ribbon around 10 cm × 1 cm card
→ 22 cm
20 square m
Carpet for 5 m × 4 m room
→ 20 square m
20 m
Perimeter uses addition around the edge and area uses multiplication for the inside: 7 m × 3 m yard needs 7+3+7+3 = 20 m of fence; 6 × 6 = 36 square m of tile; the 10 cm by 1 cm card has perimeter 10+1+10+1 = 22 cm; the 5 m by 4 m room has area 5 × 4 = 20 square m of carpet.
