Time to the Minute — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. If the bus arrives at 7:45 AM and the ride takes 20 minutes, it left at 7:25 AM.
To find when the bus left, subtract 20 minutes from 7:45, which gives 7:25 AM because 45 - 20 = 25.
2. The minute hand on 3 means 15 minutes past the hour.
Each clock number represents 5 minutes, so the minute hand on 3 means 3 x 5 = 15 minutes past the hour.
3. From 10:35 AM to 11:10 AM, 35 minutes have passed.
From 10:35 to 11:00 is 25 minutes, then from 11:00 to 11:10 is 10 more, so 25 + 10 = 35 minutes in all.
4. If a piano lesson starts at 4:20 PM and lasts 40 minutes, it ends at 5:00 PM.
4:20 plus 40 minutes gives 4:60, and since 60 minutes equals one hour, the clock rolls over to exactly 5:00 PM.
5. The hour hand between 1 and 2 with the minute hand on 11 reads 1:55.
The minute hand on 11 means 11 x 5 = 55 minutes, and the hour hand between 1 and 2 shows the 1 o'clock hour, so the clock reads 1:55.
6. From 12:40 PM to 1:15 PM, 35 minutes have passed.
From 12:40 to 1:00 is 20 minutes, and from 1:00 to 1:15 is 15 more, so 20 + 15 = 35 minutes total.
7. If bedtime is at 8:30 PM and you start brushing teeth 10 minutes before, you start at 8:20 PM.
Subtracting 10 minutes from 8:30 gives 8:20 because 30 - 10 = 20 minutes past 8 o'clock.
8. A clock with the minute hand on 6 shows 30 minutes past the hour.
The minute hand on 6 means 6 x 5 = 30 minutes, which is exactly half past the hour.
9. From 9:05 AM to 9:50 AM, 45 minutes have passed.
From 9:05 to 9:50, subtract 5 from 50 to get 45 minutes elapsed within the same hour.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each time span to how many minutes it lasts.
3:10 to 3:45
→ 35 minutes
50 minutes
5:20 to 6:00
→ 40 minutes
15 minutes
8:00 to 8:15
→ 15 minutes
35 minutes
11:30 to 12:20
→ 50 minutes
40 minutes
Correct matches: 3:10 to 3:45 → 35 minutes; 5:20 to 6:00 → 40 minutes; 8:00 to 8:15 → 15 minutes; 11:30 to 12:20 → 50 minutes.
