Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
The witch baked 3 groups of 5 cookies and got 20 cookies.
Corrected: The witch baked 3 groups of 5 cookies and got 15 cookies.
3 groups of 5 is 3 × 5 = 15 cookies, not 20. You can skip-count by 5: 5, 10, 15.
2. Fix the sentence:
Ghosts is the most scariest creatures at the haunted house.
Corrected: Ghosts are the scariest creatures at the haunted house.
The subject 'Ghosts' is plural, so it needs the plural verb 'are' instead of 'is'. Also, 'scariest' already shows the most, so you do not need 'most' in front of it.
3. Fix the sentence:
Each pumpkin has 4 seeds and there are 6 pumpkins so there are 20 seeds.
Corrected: Each pumpkin has 4 seeds and there are 6 pumpkins so there are 24 seeds.
6 pumpkins with 4 seeds each is 6 × 4 = 24 seeds, not 20. You can skip-count by 4 six times: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 7 groups of 3 bats equals 21 bats.
7 groups of 3 means 7 × 3 = 21. You can skip-count by 3 seven times: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21.
2. A simile uses the words like or as to compare things.
A simile always uses 'like' or 'as' to compare two things. Example: 'The moon is bright as a lamp' uses 'as' to make the comparison.
3. 5 times 4 trick-or-treaters equals 20 trick-or-treaters.
5 × 4 = 20. You can think of it as 5 groups of 4 or 4 groups of 5 — both give 20.
4. The main idea of a story is what it is mostly about.
The main idea is the most important point in a story or passage. It tells what the whole piece is really about.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 6 times 3 equals 18.
True False
6 × 3 = 18. You can skip-count by 3 six times: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18.
2. A metaphor uses the word like to compare two things.
True False
A metaphor compares two things directly without using 'like' or 'as' — that is a simile. A metaphor says one thing IS another, like 'the sky is a blanket'.
3. Rounding 47 to the nearest ten gives 50.
True False
The ones digit in 47 is 7, which is 5 or greater, so you round up. That makes 47 round to 50.
