Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
The skeleton danced happy through the graveyard at night.
Corrected: The skeleton danced happily through the graveyard at night.
The word describes HOW the skeleton danced, so it needs an adverb. 'Happily' ends in -ly and is the adverb form of 'happy'.
2. Fix the sentence:
There are 4 bags with 8 candies each making 36 candies total.
Corrected: There are 4 bags with 8 candies each making 32 candies total.
4 bags × 8 candies = 32 candies, not 36. You can double-check by doubling twice: 8 + 8 = 16, then 16 + 16 = 32.
3. Fix the sentence:
The owl hooted loud as thunder is an example of a metaphor.
Corrected: The owl hooted loud as thunder is an example of a simile.
The phrase uses the word 'as' to compare the hoot to thunder, which is the clue for a simile. A metaphor would not use 'like' or 'as'.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 9 times 2 zombie costumes equals 18 costumes.
9 × 2 = 18. Multiplying by 2 is the same as doubling, so double 9 to get 18.
2. Figurative language that gives human traits to objects is called personification.
Personification means giving human actions or feelings to non-human things, like 'the wind whispered'. The word even starts with 'person' to help you remember.
3. 8 groups of 3 spiders equals 24 spiders.
8 × 3 = 24. You can skip-count by 3 eight times, or flip it to 3 groups of 8 to get the same answer.
4. When you round 83 to the nearest ten you get 80.
The ones digit in 83 is 3, which is less than 5, so you round down. That makes 83 round to 80.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 7 times 5 equals 35.
True False
7 × 5 = 35. You can skip-count by 5 seven times: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35.
2. Personification means comparing two things using like.
True False
Comparing two things using 'like' is a simile, not personification. Personification gives human qualities to things that are not human.
3. Rounding 62 to the nearest ten gives 70.
True False
The ones digit in 62 is 2, which is less than 5, so you round down to 60. Rounding up would be wrong here.
