Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
The mummy chased we through the dark pyramid hallway.
Corrected: The mummy chased us through the dark pyramid hallway.
'We' is used as a subject, but here it is the object being chased, so it must be 'us'. You would say 'chased us', never 'chased we'.
2. Fix the sentence:
There are 5 shelves with 7 potion bottles each making 30 bottles.
Corrected: There are 5 shelves with 7 potion bottles each making 35 bottles.
5 shelves × 7 bottles = 35, not 30. You can skip-count by 7 five times: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35.
3. Fix the sentence:
The vampire sleep in a coffin during the daytime hours.
Corrected: The vampire sleeps in a coffin during the daytime hours.
The subject 'The vampire' is singular, so the verb needs an -s ending: 'sleeps'. This matches subject-verb agreement rules.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 6 groups of 6 candy apples equals 36 candy apples.
6 × 6 = 36. This is a square number because you are multiplying a number by itself.
2. A story's theme is the lesson or message the author wants to share.
The theme is the big idea or life lesson a story teaches, such as 'being kind matters'. It is different from the plot, which is what happens.
3. 4 times 9 haunted paintings equals 36 paintings.
4 × 9 = 36. You can also think of it as 9 × 4, which is the same answer because order does not change multiplication.
4. When you round 74 to the nearest ten you get 70.
The ones digit in 74 is 4, which is less than 5, so you round down to 70.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 8 times 3 equals 24.
True False
8 × 3 = 24. You can check by doubling 8 to 16, then adding one more 8 to get 24.
2. Alliteration is when nearby words start with the same sound.
True False
Alliteration repeats the same starting sound in words that are close together, like 'big black bat'. It makes sentences fun to say out loud.
3. Rounding 55 to the nearest ten gives 50.
True False
The rule says when the ones digit is 5, you round UP. So 55 rounds to 60, not 50.
