Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
The werewolf howled loud under the full moon last night.
Corrected: The werewolf howled loudly under the full moon last night.
The word describes HOW the werewolf howled, so it needs the adverb 'loudly' ending in -ly. 'Loud' is the adjective form.
2. Fix the sentence:
3 rows of 9 jack-o-lanterns equals 24 jack-o-lanterns.
Corrected: 3 rows of 9 jack-o-lanterns equals 27 jack-o-lanterns.
3 × 9 = 27, not 24. You can skip-count by 9 three times: 9, 18, 27.
3. Fix the sentence:
Me and my friend went trick-or-treating on our street.
Corrected: My friend and I went trick-or-treating on our street.
Put yourself last ('friend and I'), and use 'I' as the subject of the sentence. 'Me' is an object pronoun, not a subject pronoun.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 7 times 4 gummy worms equals 28 gummy worms.
7 × 4 = 28. You can double twice: 7 + 7 = 14, then 14 + 14 = 28.
2. The person telling a story is called the narrator.
The narrator is the voice that tells the story to the reader. They can be a character in the story or an outside observer.
3. 8 groups of 5 skeleton bones equals 40 bones.
8 × 5 = 40. Skip-counting by 5 eight times gives: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40.
4. Rounded to the nearest ten, 46 becomes 50.
The ones digit in 46 is 6, which is 5 or greater, so you round up to 50.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 9 times 4 equals 36.
True False
9 × 4 = 36. You can think of it as (10 × 4) - 4 = 40 - 4 = 36.
2. The setting of a story is the problem the character must solve.
True False
The setting is WHERE and WHEN a story takes place. The problem the character faces is called the conflict.
3. Rounding 35 to the nearest ten gives 40.
True False
When the ones digit is 5, you round up. So 35 rounds up to 40.
