Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. A witch placed 9 candles on each of 7 tables. How many candles did she use in all?
A) 56
B) 63
C) 72
D) 54
9 candles × 7 tables = 63 candles. You can also do 7 × 9, which equals the same 63.
2. Read: "The wind whispered secrets through the graveyard gates." What figurative language is used?
A) Simile
B) Hyperbole
C) Personification
D) Alliteration
Wind cannot actually whisper or share secrets — these are human actions. Giving human behavior to wind is personification.
3. Liam collected 53 candies and Mia collected 29 candies. What is the best estimate of their total rounded to the nearest ten?
A) 90
B) 70
C) 80
D) 82
Round 53 down to 50 and 29 up to 30. Then 50 + 30 = 80.
4. Which sentence contains alliteration?
A) The bat flew silently over the barn.
B) Creepy cats crept carefully past the cobwebs.
C) The pumpkin glowed like a lantern.
D) She screamed when she saw the spider.
Four words (creepy, cats, crept, carefully, cobwebs) all start with the /k/ sound. Repeating the same starting sound in nearby words is alliteration.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. 7 times 8 broomsticks equals 56 broomsticks.
7 × 8 = 56. A helpful way: (7 × 10) - (7 × 2) = 70 - 14 = 56.
2. The part of a story where the problem is solved is called the resolution.
The resolution is the ending part where the conflict gets fixed or wrapped up. It comes after the climax, when the tension is highest.
3. Rounded to the nearest ten, 44 plus 38 is about 80.
Round 44 down to 40 and 38 up to 40. Then 40 + 40 = 80.
4. A comparison that does not use like or as is called a metaphor.
A metaphor says one thing IS another without using 'like' or 'as', such as 'The classroom was a zoo'. That is what separates it from a simile.
5. 6 times 9 ghost lanterns equals 54 lanterns.
6 × 9 = 54. You can think (6 × 10) - 6 = 60 - 6 = 54.
