Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A vampire invited 8 friends and each brought 5 treats, so there were 40 treats.
8 friends × 5 treats = 40 treats. Eight equal groups of 5 is a multiplication situation.
2. The main character in a story is called the protagonist.
The protagonist is the main character that the story is really about. Their opposite, the villain or bad guy, is called the antagonist.
3. 6 skeletons each wore 2 hats, making 12 hats in all.
6 × 2 = 12 hats. Multiplying by 2 is the same as doubling, so double 6 to get 12.
4. To estimate 67 minus 29 by rounding to the nearest ten, you compute 70 minus 30 which equals 40.
70 - 30 = 40. Rounding first makes the subtraction quick and gives a close estimate to the real answer.
5. A passage that tries to make you believe something is called persuasive writing.
Persuasive writing uses reasons and evidence to convince readers to agree with an opinion. Think 'persuade' means 'convince'.
6. 4 cauldrons with 9 potions each means 36 potions total.
4 × 9 = 36 potions. You can also do (4 × 10) - 4 = 40 - 4 = 36.
7. The setting of a story tells the reader where and when it takes place.
Setting always has two parts: the place (where) and the time (when). Both pieces work together to set the scene.
8. 3 groups of 7 candy bars equals 21 candy bars.
3 × 7 = 21. Skip-counting by 7 three times gives: 7, 14, 21.
9. A word that sounds like the noise it describes, such as buzz, is called onomatopoeia.
Onomatopoeia means the word IS the sound, like buzz, boom, or crash. You hear the noise just by saying the word.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Werewolf
→ Transforms under a full moon
Wrapped in ancient cloth bandages
Frankenstein
→ Built from parts in a laboratory
Transforms under a full moon
Mummy
→ Wrapped in ancient cloth bandages
A count who avoids sunlight
Dracula
→ A count who avoids sunlight
Built from parts in a laboratory
Each Halloween figure has a famous clue: werewolves change with the full moon, Frankenstein was built in a lab, mummies are wrapped in bandages, and Dracula is a sun-avoiding count. Use the signature trait to find each match.
