Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A zombie had 9 jars with 3 eyeballs in each, so there were 27 eyeballs.
9 jars × 3 eyeballs = 27 eyeballs. Skip-counting by 3 nine times gives 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27.
2. A word that means the same as another word is called a synonym.
Synonyms are words with the same or very close meanings, like big and large. The 'syn-' part of the word means 'same'.
3. 6 vampires each collected 7 candies, making 42 candies in all.
6 × 7 = 42 candies. You can split it: (6 × 5) + (6 × 2) = 30 + 12 = 42.
4. To estimate 71 minus 38 by rounding to the nearest ten you get 30.
Round 71 down to 70 and 38 up to 40. Then 70 - 40 = 30.
5. Her eyes were as bright as stars is an example of a simile.
The phrase uses 'as' to compare eyes to stars, and that is the clue for a simile. Similes always use 'like' or 'as'.
6. 4 haunted houses with 8 rooms each means 32 rooms total.
4 × 8 = 32 rooms. You can think of it as 8 + 8 + 8 + 8, or skip-count by 8 four times: 8, 16, 24, 32.
7. Rounded to the nearest ten, 87 plus 14 is about 100.
Round 87 up to 90 and 14 down to 10. Then 90 + 10 = 100.
8. The problem a character faces in a story is called the conflict.
Conflict is the trouble or challenge the main character must deal with. Every good story has some kind of conflict to drive the plot.
9. 7 spiders each spun 5 webs, so there were 35 webs altogether.
7 × 5 = 35 webs. Skip-counting by 5 seven times gives: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each vocabulary word to its meaning.
Synonym
→ A word with the same meaning
A word part added to the end
Antonym
→ A word with the opposite meaning
A word with the opposite meaning
Prefix
→ A word part added to the beginning
A word with the same meaning
Suffix
→ A word part added to the end
A word part added to the beginning
'Syn-' means same and 'ant-' means against (opposite), so synonyms match and antonyms do not. 'Pre-' means before (start of word) and 'suf-' comes at the end — the word parts give you the meanings.
