Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
A garden bed that is 5 feet long and 3 feet wide has a perimeter of 15 feet.
Corrected: A garden bed that is 5 feet long and 3 feet wide has a perimeter of 16 feet.
Perimeter adds up all four sides: 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 feet, not 15. You can also use the shortcut 2 × (5 + 3) = 16.
2. Fix the sentence:
The butterflys flew over the colorful flower garden in spring.
Corrected: The butterflies flew over the colorful flower garden in spring.
When a word ends in a consonant plus 'y', change the y to i and add 'es' to make it plural. So 'butterfly' becomes 'butterflies', not 'butterflys'.
3. Fix the sentence:
If you eat 28 of a pie, you have eaten one half of the pie.
Corrected: If you eat 28 of a pie, you have eaten one fourth of the pie.
28 simplifies by dividing the top and bottom by 2, giving 14 (one fourth). One half would be 48, not 28.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A square garden with sides of 6 feet has a perimeter of 24 feet.
A square has 4 equal sides, so the perimeter is 4 × 6 = 24 feet. You can also add 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24.
2. An inference is a guess based on clues from the text.
An inference is a smart guess readers make by combining clues in the text with what they already know. The clues always come from the text itself.
3. If a recipe uses 13 cup of honey and 13 cup of butter, you need 2 thirds in all.
When fractions have the same denominator, you add the numerators: 1 + 1 = 2 thirds. The bottom number stays the same.
4. A caterpillar measures about 2 inches long.
A caterpillar is a small insect, so we measure it in inches — the unit used for short lengths. Feet or yards would be too long.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. Perimeter is the distance around a shape.
True False
Perimeter is exactly that — the total distance around the outside edge of a shape. You find it by adding all the side lengths.
2. 12 is less than 14.
True False
12 is actually greater than 14 because halves are bigger pieces than fourths. Cut a pizza in 2 and each piece is bigger than if you cut it in 4.
3. Plants need sunlight, water, and soil to grow.
True False
Plants really do need all three: sunlight to make food, water to stay alive, and soil for nutrients. Remove any one and the plant will not grow well.
