Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
The robin singed a beautiful song from the top of the oak tree.
Corrected: The robin sang a beautiful song from the top of the oak tree.
The past tense of 'sing' is 'sang', not 'singed'. 'Sing' is an irregular verb, so it does not follow the normal '-ed' rule.
2. Fix the sentence:
A rectangular garden that is 4 feet long and 3 feet wide has an area of 14 square feet.
Corrected: A rectangular garden that is 4 feet long and 3 feet wide has an area of 12 square feet.
Area of a rectangle is length × width: 4 × 3 = 12 square feet, not 14. Do not confuse area with perimeter (which would be 14).
3. Fix the sentence:
36 of the flowers bloomed which means three sixths or one third bloomed.
Corrected: 36 of the flowers bloomed which means three sixths or one half bloomed.
36 simplifies by dividing the top and bottom by 3, which gives 12 (one half). One third would equal 26, not 36.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A rectangle that is 7 feet long and 2 feet wide has an area of 14 square feet.
Area = length × width, so 7 × 2 = 14 square feet. Area is always measured in square units.
2. When you make an inference, you combine text clues with what you already know.
An inference is text clues PLUS background knowledge. You use what you already 'know' from life to help figure out what the text is saying.
3. 24 of a cup is the same as 12 of a cup.
24 simplifies to 12 by dividing both top and bottom by 2. Two fourths and one half cover the same amount of the whole.
4. A rain gauge measures rainfall in inches.
In the United States, rain gauges use inches to show how much rain has fallen. Each inch line on the gauge shows a standard small amount.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. Area is measured in square units.
True False
Area measures the space inside a flat shape, which is always counted in square units like square feet or square inches. Perimeter uses regular units instead.
2. 36 is equal to 12.
True False
Dividing both parts of 36 by 3 gives 12, so they are equivalent fractions. Three out of six is half of the whole.
3. A rectangle with sides 5 and 3 has an area of 16 square units.
True False
The actual area is 5 × 3 = 15 square units, not 16. The number 16 would be the perimeter: 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16.
