Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
A monarch butterfly has 6 legs just like all spiders do.
Corrected: A monarch butterfly has 6 legs just like all insects do.
Butterflies are insects, which all have 6 legs. Spiders are arachnids, not insects, and they have 8 legs.
2. Fix the sentence:
If it rains 3 inches each week for 4 weeks, the total rainfall is 7 inches.
Corrected: If it rains 3 inches each week for 4 weeks, the total rainfall is 12 inches.
3 inches per week × 4 weeks = 12 inches total, not 7. Equal groups over time call for multiplication.
3. Fix the sentence:
The babys ducks followed their mother across the pond in a line.
Corrected: The baby ducks followed their mother across the pond in a line.
'Baby' is being used as an adjective to describe 'ducks', so it should not have an 's' — only 'ducks' is plural. 'Babys' is also the wrong plural form of baby; it would be 'babies'.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. If 5 butterflies each have 6 legs, there are 30 legs in all.
5 butterflies × 6 legs = 30 legs. You can skip-count by 6 five times: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30.
2. A baby frog that still has a tail is called a tadpole.
A tadpole is the early stage of a frog's life, when it lives in water and has a tail. The tail shrinks as the tadpole grows into a frog.
3. If 48 of the eggs have hatched, that is the same as 12.
48 simplifies to 12 by dividing both the top and bottom by 4. Four out of eight equal parts is half of the whole.
4. It rained 2 inches on Monday and 3 inches on Tuesday, so the total is 5 inches.
Add the rain from each day: 2 + 3 = 5 inches. When amounts have the same unit, you simply add them.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. A caterpillar turns into a butterfly inside a cocoon called a chrysalis.
True False
Butterflies form a hard protective case called a chrysalis. Inside, the caterpillar changes its body into a butterfly over about two weeks.
2. 4 times 5 equals 25.
True False
4 × 5 actually equals 20, not 25. 5 × 5 is 25 — those are different products.
3. Baby birds that have just hatched are called chicks.
True False
Baby birds such as chickens, robins, and eagles are all called chicks when they first hatch. The word works for most kinds of baby birds.
