Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
Each row in the garden has 7 flowers and there are 3 rows so there are 24 flowers.
Corrected: Each row in the garden has 7 flowers and there are 3 rows so there are 21 flowers.
3 rows × 7 flowers = 21 flowers, not 24. Skip-counting by 7 three times gives 7, 14, 21.
2. Fix the sentence:
The lambes played in the green pasture during the warm spring afternoon.
Corrected: The lambs played in the green pasture during the warm spring afternoon.
The plural of 'lamb' is 'lambs' — just add an 's'. The extra 'e' in 'lambes' is wrong because lamb does not end in 's', 'x', 'ch', or 'sh'.
3. Fix the sentence:
If you share 12 seeds equally among 4 pots, each pot gets 4 seeds.
Corrected: If you share 12 seeds equally among 4 pots, each pot gets 3 seeds.
12 ÷ 4 = 3 seeds per pot, not 4. Sharing equally means using division.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A nest has 4 eggs and there are 3 nests, so there are 12 eggs in all.
3 nests × 4 eggs = 12 eggs. Equal groups always call for multiplication.
2. Flowers need water, sunlight, and soil to grow.
Soil gives plants nutrients and a place to grow roots. Along with water and sunlight, it is one of the three key things plants need.
3. If 36 of the tulips are red, that equals 12 of the tulips.
36 simplifies to 12 by dividing the top and bottom by 3. Three out of six equal parts is exactly half.
4. A gardener plants 8 rows with 4 seeds each, so she plants 32 seeds total.
8 rows × 4 seeds = 32 seeds. You can also double 8 twice: 8 + 8 = 16, then 16 + 16 = 32.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. Lambs are baby sheep that are born in the spring.
True False
Sheep usually give birth in the spring when weather is warm, so lambs are a classic spring animal. The warmer temperatures help them survive.
2. 6 times 3 equals 15.
True False
6 × 3 is actually 18, not 15. 5 × 3 would give 15, but 6 × 3 is one more group of 3, so the answer is 18.
3. Tulips grow from bulbs planted in the ground.
True False
Tulips really do grow from bulbs that store food energy underground. Gardeners plant the bulbs in fall so they bloom in spring.
