Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. A garden is 9 feet long and 6 feet wide. What is its perimeter?
A) 54 feet
B) 15 feet
C) 30 feet
D) 36 feet
Perimeter = 9 + 6 + 9 + 6 = 30 feet. The trap answer 54 is the area (9 × 6), which is different from perimeter.
2. Read: "The robin pecked at the soft ground and pulled out a worm. It flew back to its nest where three baby birds waited with open beaks." What can you infer?
A) The robin is building a new nest.
B) The robin is feeding its babies.
C) The baby birds are learning to fly.
D) The worm escaped from the robin.
The robin pulled out a worm and flew to babies waiting with open beaks — classic feeding behavior. The clues together point to feeding, not building or flying lessons.
3. A rectangular flower bed has an area of 36 square feet. If it is 9 feet long, how wide is it?
A) 3 feet
B) 27 feet
C) 4 feet
D) 6 feet
Since length × width = area, solve 9 × ? = 36. Since 9 × 4 = 36, the width must be 4 feet.
4. Which fraction is equivalent to 46?
A) 24
B) 23
C) 48
D) 34
Divide both the top and bottom of 46 by 2: that gives 23. The other choices do not equal 46 when you simplify.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. A square stepping stone has 4-inch sides, so its area is 16 square inches.
Area of a square = side × side, so 4 × 4 = 16 square inches. Squares have all equal sides, so just multiply the side by itself.
2. If a recipe calls for 58 cup of oats, you still need 3 eighths to make a full cup.
A full cup is 88. If you have 58, then 8 - 5 = 3 more eighths are needed. 58 + 38 = 88 = 1 full cup.
3. A fence around a rectangular yard that is 12 feet by 8 feet needs 40 feet of fencing.
Fencing goes around the outside (perimeter): 12 + 8 + 12 + 8 = 40 feet. The shortcut 2 × (12 + 8) = 2 × 20 = 40 works too.
4. When you infer, you use evidence from the text and your own knowledge.
An inference combines text evidence with your background knowledge. Both are needed to make a smart guess.
5. A patio that is 7 feet long and 5 feet wide has an area of 35 square feet.
Area = length × width, so 7 × 5 = 35 square feet. Area is always in square units.
