Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. A butterfly garden is shaped like a rectangle that is 11 feet long and 4 feet wide. What is its area?
A) 30 square feet
B) 15 square feet
C) 44 square feet
D) 48 square feet
Area = length × width = 11 × 4 = 44 square feet. You can think of it as 10 × 4 + 1 × 4 = 40 + 4 = 44.
2. Read: "Dark clouds covered the sky and the wind picked up. The flowers bent low to the ground." What can you infer will happen next?
A) The sun will come out.
B) It is going to rain or storm.
C) The flowers will grow taller.
D) Birds will start singing.
Dark clouds, strong wind, and bending flowers are all classic signs of an approaching storm. These text clues combined with weather knowledge lead to a storm inference.
3. Sam needs 34 cup of soil for each pot. He fills 4 pots. How many cups of soil does he use?
A) 3 cups
B) 12 cups
C) 7 cups
D) 4 cups
34 × 4 pots = 124 = 3 whole cups. Four groups of 34 add to 4 × 3 = 12 fourths, which simplifies to 3 cups.
4. A park trail forms a rectangle that is 15 feet long and 5 feet wide. What is its perimeter?
A) 75 feet
B) 20 feet
C) 40 feet
D) 30 feet
Perimeter = 15 + 5 + 15 + 5 = 40 feet. The trap answer 75 is the area, not the perimeter.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. A raised bed that is 8 feet by 6 feet has an area of 48 square feet.
Area = 8 × 6 = 48 square feet. You can also split it: (8 × 5) + (8 × 1) = 40 + 8 = 48.
2. If 68 of the garden is planted, that simplifies to 34 of the garden.
Divide both 6 and 8 by 2 to simplify: 68 becomes 34. Six out of eight parts is the same as three out of four equal parts.
3. A square classroom rug with 9-foot sides has a perimeter of 36 feet.
A square has 4 equal sides, so perimeter = 4 × 9 = 36 feet. You can also add 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 36.
4. An inference is not stated directly but is implied by the reader.
An inference is 'implied' — meaning the author hints at the idea without coming out and saying it. The reader uses clues to understand what is implied.
5. A walkway that is 10 feet by 4 feet has an area of 40 square feet.
Area = 10 × 4 = 40 square feet. Ten groups of 4 is easy to skip-count: 4, 8, 12...40.
