Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A garden plot that is 8 feet long and 5 feet wide has a perimeter of 26 feet.
Perimeter adds all four sides: 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 feet. The shortcut is 2 × (8 + 5) = 2 × 13 = 26.
2. A spring recipe calls for 34 cup of flour and 14 cup of sugar, totaling 1 cup.
34 + 14 = 44, which equals 1 whole cup. When the numerator matches the denominator, the fraction equals 1.
3. A flower bed that is 6 feet long and 4 feet wide has an area of 24 square feet.
Area = length × width, so 6 × 4 = 24 square feet. Always use square units for area.
4. When you infer, you look for clues in the text that hint at the answer.
Readers find clues in the words the author chose, then use them to figure out what is not directly stated. Clues are the evidence for your inference.
5. A fence goes around a square pond with 9-foot sides, requiring 36 feet of fencing.
A square has 4 equal sides, so 4 × 9 = 36 feet. Fencing goes around the outside, which is the perimeter.
6. If a garden is divided into 8 equal sections and 2 are planted with roses, then 2 eighths have roses.
If 2 out of the 8 equal sections have roses, then 2 eighths (28) of the garden has roses. The numerator tells how many parts are counted.
7. A rectangular patio is 7 feet by 3 feet, so its area is 21 square feet.
Area = length × width, so 7 × 3 = 21 square feet. Skip-counting by 3 seven times gives the same result: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21.
8. Rain is measured using an instrument called a rain gauge.
A rain gauge is a tube with measuring marks that collects rainfall so you can read how much fell. It sits outside in an open area.
9. A walkway is 10 feet long and 2 feet wide, so its perimeter is 24 feet.
Perimeter is 10 + 2 + 10 + 2 = 24 feet. Using the shortcut: 2 × (10 + 2) = 2 × 12 = 24.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Perimeter
→ The distance around a shape
A guess based on text clues
Area
→ The space inside a flat shape
The space inside a flat shape
Fraction
→ A part of a whole
A part of a whole
Inference
→ A guess based on text clues
The distance around a shape
Each term has a unique meaning: perimeter is the outside distance, area is the inside space, a fraction shows a part of a whole, and an inference is a smart guess using clues. Match each by its key feature.
