Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A planter box is 9 feet long and 4 feet wide, so its perimeter is 26 feet.
Perimeter = 9 + 4 + 9 + 4 = 26 feet. The shortcut 2 × (9 + 4) = 2 × 13 = 26 gives the same answer.
2. A smoothie recipe needs 26 cup of berries, which simplifies to 13 of a cup.
Divide both 2 and 6 by 2 to simplify: 26 becomes 13. Two out of six equal parts is the same as one out of three.
3. A tile floor is 5 feet by 5 feet, so its area is 25 square feet.
Area = 5 × 5 = 25 square feet. When both sides are equal, the area is a square number.
4. An author gives clues so the reader can infer what happens next.
Good authors plant hints so readers can predict what will happen next. This is the inferring-while-reading skill.
5. A rectangular sandbox is 8 feet by 3 feet, giving a perimeter of 22 feet.
Perimeter = 8 + 3 + 8 + 3 = 22 feet. The shortcut 2 × (8 + 3) = 2 × 11 = 22 works too.
6. If 48 of the seeds have sprouted, that is the same as 12 of the seeds.
48 simplifies to 12 by dividing both numbers by 4. Four out of eight equal parts covers exactly half of the whole.
7. A garden path is 6 feet by 2 feet, so its area is 12 square feet.
Area = length × width, so 6 × 2 = 12 square feet. Skip-counting by 2 six times gives 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.
8. A thermometer at 32 degrees Fahrenheit means water will freeze.
Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit — the temperature where liquid water turns into solid ice. It is a key science fact.
9. A porch is 10 feet long and 3 feet wide, so its area is 30 square feet.
Area = 10 × 3 = 30 square feet. Ten groups of 3 skip-counted out equals 30.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Tulip
→ Blooms in early spring from a bulb
Grows in fall from a vine
Sunflower
→ Tall yellow flower of summer
Blooms in early spring from a bulb
Daffodil
→ Spring flower with a trumpet shape
Tall yellow flower of summer
Pumpkin
→ Grows in fall from a vine
Spring flower with a trumpet shape
Each plant has a unique season and shape: tulips and daffodils bloom in spring, sunflowers grow tall in summer, and pumpkins ripen on vines in fall. Match each plant to its signature trait.
