Summer Review Sheets — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. At a cookout, 8 burgers were on each of 5 grills, making 40 burgers total.
5 grills × 8 burgers = 40 burgers. Skip-counting by 8 five times gives 8, 16, 24, 32, 40.
2. The setting of a story tells the place and time of the events.
Setting always has two parts: place (where) and time (when). Together they tell the reader the scene.
3. 72 divided by 9 equals 8.
72 ÷ 9 = 8. Check: 9 × 8 = 72, so the division works correctly.
4. A pitcher holds 4 cups of lemonade. Two pitchers hold 8 cups.
2 pitchers × 4 cups = 8 cups. You can also double 4 to get 8.
5. 66 of a pizza is the same as 1 whole pizza.
When the numerator equals the denominator, the fraction equals 1 whole. 66 means all 6 of the 6 equal slices.
6. 7 rows of 7 beach towels equals 49 towels.
7 × 7 = 49 towels. This is a square number — when a number is multiplied by itself.
7. A character's traits describe what the character is like.
Character traits tell the reader what a person is 'like' — such as brave, kind, or funny. They describe personality, not actions.
8. 40 divided by 5 equals 8.
40 ÷ 5 = 8. Check: 5 × 8 = 40, so the division is correct.
9. One yard equals 3 feet.
1 yard is always equal to 3 feet. Think of a yardstick, which measures 3 feet total.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Setting
→ Where and when a story takes place
A person or animal in a story
Theme
→ The lesson or message of a story
The sequence of events in a story
Character
→ A person or animal in a story
Where and when a story takes place
Plot
→ The sequence of events in a story
The lesson or message of a story
Story elements each do a different job: setting covers where and when, theme teaches the lesson, characters are the people or animals, and plot is the order of events. Match each element to its unique role.
