Winter Holiday Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
Sam bought 3 boxes of ornaments with 6 in each box and got 21 ornaments.
Corrected: Sam bought 3 boxes of ornaments with 6 in each box and got 18 ornaments.
3 boxes with 6 ornaments each is 3 × 6 = 18, not 21. You can skip-count by 6 three times: 6, 12, 18.
2. Fix the sentence:
The childrens built a snowman in the backyard yesterday morning.
Corrected: The children built a snowman in the backyard yesterday morning.
'Children' is already the plural form of 'child' — you do not add an -s to it. 'Childrens' is not a real word.
3. Fix the sentence:
A recipe calls for 14 cup of sugar and 14 cup of flour which totals 12 cup of sugar.
Corrected: A recipe calls for 14 cup of sugar and 14 cup of flour which totals 12 cup of ingredients.
14 + 14 = 24 = 12 cup, but only half of that is sugar. The correct label is 'ingredients' because the total mixes sugar and flour.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. If each stocking holds 8 treats and there are 4 stockings, there are 32 treats total.
4 stockings × 8 treats = 32 treats. You can double twice: 8 + 8 = 16, then 16 + 16 = 32.
2. The main idea is the most important point the author makes.
The main idea is the biggest point a passage is telling you. It is what the whole text is mostly about.
3. A pie cut into 4 equal pieces means each piece is one fourth of the pie.
The denominator 4 is read as 'fourth' or 'quarter'. Each piece of 4 equal parts is 14.
4. A thermometer measures temperature in degrees.
A thermometer is the tool for measuring how hot or cold something is. The unit 'degrees' is always used with temperature.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 4 times 8 equals 32.
True False
4 × 8 = 32. You can check with double-doubling: 4 × 2 = 8, 8 × 2 = 16, 16 × 2 = 32.
2. One half of a pie is smaller than one fourth of the same pie.
True False
One half is bigger than one fourth because the pie is split into fewer pieces. Fewer pieces means each piece is larger.
3. A ruler can measure length in inches or centimeters.
True False
Most rulers have both inches on one edge and centimeters on the other edge. Both units measure length.
