Winter Holiday Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
The snow fell gentle on the rooftops and covered everything in white.
Corrected: The snow fell gently on the rooftops and covered everything in white.
The word describes HOW the snow fell, so it needs the adverb 'gently' that ends in -ly. 'Gentle' is the adjective form.
2. Fix the sentence:
Maria baked 5 trays of 7 cookies each and made 30 cookies.
Corrected: Maria baked 5 trays of 7 cookies each and made 35 cookies.
5 trays × 7 cookies = 35, not 30. You can skip-count by 7 five times: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35.
3. Fix the sentence:
If you eat 26 of a pizza, you have eaten two thirds of it.
Corrected: If you eat 26 of a pizza, you have eaten one third of it.
26 simplifies to 13 because both numerator and denominator can be divided by 2. Two thirds would be 46, not 26.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Liam had 24 snowballs and shared them equally among 3 friends, so each friend got 8.
24 ÷ 3 = 8. Sharing into equal groups means dividing.
2. A story's main idea is supported by details from the text.
Supporting details are the facts and examples that prove or explain the main idea. They give the reader extra information.
3. 33 of a whole is the same as 1 whole.
When the top and bottom numbers of a fraction are equal, the fraction equals 1. All three thirds together make one full whole.
4. You measure the weight of a package using ounces or grams.
Ounces are the U.S. customary weight unit that pairs with grams in the metric system. Both measure how heavy something is.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 5 times 7 equals 35.
True False
5 × 7 = 35. Skip-counting by 5 seven times gives 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35.
2. 24 is the same as 13.
True False
24 simplifies to 12, not 13. Half and one-third name different amounts.
3. Inches and feet are used to measure length.
True False
Both inches and feet are length units. 12 inches equal 1 foot.
