Winter Holiday Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
Jake bought 4 packs of candy canes with 5 in each pack and got 25 candy canes.
Corrected: Jake bought 4 packs of candy canes with 5 in each pack and got 20 candy canes.
4 packs × 5 candy canes = 20, not 25. You can skip-count by 5 four times: 5, 10, 15, 20.
2. Fix the sentence:
The deers ran across the frozen pond at sunset.
Corrected: The deer ran across the frozen pond at sunset.
'Deer' is an irregular plural — the singular and plural forms are the same word. You never add -s to make it plural.
3. Fix the sentence:
Two halfs of a snowball make one whole snowball.
Corrected: Two halves of a snowball make one whole snowball.
The plural of 'half' is 'halves' — the f changes to v before adding -es. 'Halfs' is not a real English word.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. If 7 elves wrap 3 gifts each, they wrap 21 gifts in all.
7 × 3 = 21 gifts. Equal groups of gifts means multiplication.
2. A word that means the opposite of another word is called an antonym.
Antonyms are opposites, like hot and cold. The prefix 'ant-' means 'against' or 'opposite'.
3. A cake cut into 8 equal slices means each slice is one eighth of the cake.
A denominator of 8 is read as 'eighth'. Each of 8 equal pieces is 18 of the whole.
4. One foot equals 12 inches.
There are 12 inches in 1 foot — this is a standard U.S. length conversion to memorize.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 6 times 9 equals 56.
True False
6 × 9 = 54, not 56. Think (6 × 10) - 6 = 60 - 6 = 54.
2. One third of a pie is larger than one half of the same pie.
True False
One third is smaller than one half because the pie is split into MORE pieces. More pieces means each piece is smaller.
3. A scale can measure weight in pounds or kilograms.
True False
A scale is the tool for measuring weight. Pounds are U.S. units and kilograms are metric units, but both measure weight.
