Winter Holiday Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
Mia strung 6 rows of 8 lights and counted 46 lights.
Corrected: Mia strung 6 rows of 8 lights and counted 48 lights.
6 rows × 8 lights = 48, not 46. You can skip-count by 8 six times: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48.
2. Fix the sentence:
The mouses nibbled on the gingerbread house all night.
Corrected: The mice nibbled on the gingerbread house all night.
'Mice' is the irregular plural of 'mouse' — you change the whole word, not add -s. 'Mouses' is not correct English.
3. Fix the sentence:
A hot cocoa recipe calls for 13 cup of milk and 13 cup of cream, totaling 26 cup of liquid.
Corrected: A hot cocoa recipe calls for 13 cup of milk and 13 cup of cream, totaling 23 cup of liquid.
When you add fractions with the same denominator, you add the numerators and keep the denominator: 13 + 13 = 23, not 26.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. If each sled team has 9 dogs and there are 3 teams, there are 27 dogs in all.
3 teams × 9 dogs = 27 dogs. Skip-counting by 9 three times gives 9, 18, 27.
2. A word with a similar meaning to another word is called a synonym.
Synonyms share the same or close meanings, like 'big' and 'large'. The 'syn-' part means 'same'.
3. If you shade 2 out of 4 equal parts of a shape, you have shaded 24.
The fraction 'parts shaded out of total parts' becomes 24. Note that 24 also equals 12.
4. A quart of soup is the same as 4 cups.
There are 4 cups in 1 quart. The conversion is: 1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 7 times 8 equals 56.
True False
7 × 8 = 56. A helpful trick is (7 × 10) - (7 × 2) = 70 - 14 = 56.
2. 38 is greater than 58.
True False
When denominators are the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is bigger. 58 is greater than 38.
3. A thermometer shows temperature in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius.
True False
Fahrenheit and Celsius are the two main temperature scales, and thermometers show both in degrees.
