Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A pronoun takes the place of a noun in a sentence.
Pronouns (he, she, they, it) replace nouns to avoid repetition in writing.
2. Words like and, but, and or are called conjunctions.
Coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so) join words, phrases, or clauses.
3. A preposition shows the relationship between a noun and another word, such as in, on, or under.
Prepositions (in, on, under, beside, between) show relationships of place, time, or direction.
4. In the sentence "She danced gracefully," the word gracefully is an adverb.
Gracefully tells how she danced — it modifies the verb danced and is therefore an adverb.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. What is a pronoun, and why do we use pronouns in writing?
Sample answer: A pronoun is a word like he, she, or they that replaces a noun. We use pronouns so we do not repeat the same noun over and over.
Pronouns improve writing flow by preventing awkward repetition of nouns in sentences.
2. Give an example of a preposition used in a sentence and explain what it shows.
Sample answer: In "The book is on the table," the preposition "on" shows where the book is located in relation to the table.
Prepositions establish spatial, temporal, or logical relationships between the noun and other parts of the sentence.
