Spelling Grade 4 — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Mom is baking a chocolate cake for the party.
When a verb ends in silent e, drop the e before -ing: bake becomes baking.
2. The bus is stopping at every red traffic light.
Short vowel plus single consonant means double the consonant before -ing.
3. The children are playing tag in the backyard.
When a verb ends with a vowel plus y, simply add -ing with no spelling change.
4. I rode my bike all the way home yesterday.
Ride is irregular, so we use 'rode' as the past tense, not 'rided' or 'riding'.
5. She shut the window open before bedtime tonight.
Shut is irregular; its past tense looks identical to its present tense form.
6. We are writing a new song for the spring concert.
Write loses its silent e when -ing is added, producing the spelling writing.
7. The puppy was running on the rug all afternoon.
Short vowel plus one consonant means double the n: run becomes running.
8. Dad mows the lawn every Saturday after lunch.
When a verb ends in a vowel plus w, simply add -s without any other change.
9. The boys carried two heavy boxes up the stairs.
Nouns ending in x add -es to form the plural so the word stays pronounceable.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
bake + ing
→ baking
baking
stop + ing
→ stopping
stopping
play + ing
→ playing
playing
box + es
→ boxes
boxes
Each pair shows a different rule: drop e, double consonant, just add, or add -es.
