Spelling Grade 4 — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Three boys helped the teacher carry the heavy box.
Vowel plus y at the end means add -s only, with no change to the y letter.
2. We saw four bushes near the bird feeder this morning.
Nouns ending in sh add -es so the plural has an audible extra syllable.
3. The baker is making fresh bread for the customers.
Drop the silent e from make before adding -ing to give the spelling making.
4. Yesterday the team trained for the championship game.
Train ends with two consonants, so simply add -ed without any spelling change.
5. The little kitten was batting at the dangling string.
Short vowel plus single consonant means double the t before adding -ing.
6. My sister laughs at funny jokes during dinner tonight.
Laugh ends with a quiet -gh; add -s for he or she present tense actions.
7. The students placed all their books on the desks.
Book ends with a single k consonant, so add -s with no spelling change.
8. Yesterday I raced across the playground in record time.
When a verb ends in silent e, drop the e and add -d to form past tense.
9. We saw five fishes swimming in the pet store tank.
Fish takes -es when referring to several kinds, following the -sh plural rule.
