Multi-Step Word Problems — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A florist arranges 8 bouquets with 35 flowers each. She adds 60 extra roses. The total number of flowers is 340
Eight bouquets of 35 flowers give 8 × 35 = 280 flowers. Adding the 60 extra roses brings the total to 280 + 60 = 340.
2. A carpenter builds 4 shelves using 125 nails each. He had 600 nails to start. He has 100 nails left.
Four shelves at 125 nails each use 4 × 125 = 500 nails. From 600 to start, 600 − 500 = 100 nails remain.
3. A theater has 7 rows of 48 seats each. If 186 seats are taken, 150 seats are empty.
The theater's full capacity is 7 × 48 = 336 seats. With 186 taken, 336 − 186 = 150 seats are empty.
4. A camp orders 9 boxes of granola bars with 36 bars per box. After handing out 250 bars, there are 74 bars remaining.
Nine boxes of 36 bars give 9 × 36 = 324 bars. After handing out 250, the camp still has 324 − 250 = 74 bars.
5. A farmer plants 6 rows of 145 corn seeds each. Rabbits eat 230 seedlings. There are 640 plants left.
Six rows of 145 seeds equal 6 × 145 = 870 plants. The rabbits eat 230, leaving 870 − 230 = 640 corn plants.
6. A photographer takes 5 sets of 84 photos each. She deletes 175 blurry ones. She keeps 245 photos.
Five sets of 84 photos make 5 × 84 = 420 shots. Deleting 175 blurry ones leaves 420 − 175 = 245 photos to keep.
7. An office buys 3 packs of paper at $48 each and a toner cartridge for $95. The total bill is $239
The paper costs 3 × $48 = $144. Adding the $95 toner gives 144 + 95 = $239 on the bill.
8. A bus makes 4 trips carrying 55 passengers each. At the end, 38 passengers are still waiting. The bus carried 220 passengers total.
Four trips of 55 passengers carry 4 × 55 = 220 people. The 38 still waiting are not part of the bus's count, so the bus carried 220 passengers.
9. A warehouse stocks 7 crates of 150 cans each. After selling 485 cans, the warehouse has 565 cans.
Seven crates of 150 cans hold 7 × 150 = 1,050 cans. After selling 485, the warehouse has 1,050 − 485 = 565 cans left.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
6 × $75 − $120
→ $330
545
9 × 40 + 185
→ 545
$575
4 × 225 − 350
→ 550
550
3 × $160 + $95
→ $575
$330
Each match works out by doing the multiplication first, then the add or subtract: 6 × 75 = 450 and 450 − 120 = $330; 9 × 40 = 360 and 360 + 185 = 545; 4 × 225 = 900 and 900 − 350 = 550; 3 × 160 = 480 and 480 + 95 = $575.
