Patterns and Input/Output Tables — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. If input 2 gives output 8 and input 3 gives output 12, the Grade 4 rule is multiply by 4.
Both 8 divided by 2 and 12 divided by 3 equal 4, so the rule is multiply by 4.
2. For inputs 1, 2, 3 the outputs are 8, 9, 10, so the Grade 4 rule is add 7.
Every Grade 4 output is 7 more than its input, so the rule is add 7.
3. If input 5 maps to output 25 and input 6 maps to output 30, the rule is multiply by 5.
25 divided by 5 and 30 divided by 6 both equal 5, so the rule is multiply by 5.
4. For input 10 with output 2 and input 20 with output 4, the Grade 4 rule is divide by 5.
10 divided by 5 is 2 and 20 divided by 5 is 4, so the rule is divide by 5.
5. Inputs 4, 5, 6 give outputs 12, 15, 18, so the Grade 4 rule is multiply by 3.
12 divided by 4 equals 3 and 15 divided by 5 equals 3, so the rule is multiply by 3.
6. If input 7 gives output 14 and input 9 gives output 18, the Grade 4 rule is multiply by 2.
Each Grade 4 output is double its input, so the rule is multiply by 2.
7. When input 12 gives output 6 and input 18 gives output 9, the rule is divide by 2.
12 divided by 2 is 6 and 18 divided by 2 is 9, so the Grade 4 rule is divide by 2.
8. For inputs 0, 1, 2 with outputs 6, 7, 8, the Grade 4 rule is add 6.
Every Grade 4 output is exactly 6 more than its input, so the rule is add 6.
9. Inputs 3, 4, 5 produce outputs 21, 28, 35, so the Grade 4 rule is multiply by 7.
21 divided by 3 equals 7 and 28 divided by 4 equals 7, so the rule is multiply by 7.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Input 4 with rule multiply by 6
→ Output 24
Output 24
Input 9 with rule add 11
→ Output 20
Output 20
Input 24 with rule divide by 8
→ Output 3
Output 3
Input 7 with rule multiply by 5
→ Output 35
Output 35
Computing each Grade 4 output (4 times 6 is 24, 9 plus 11 is 20, 24 divided by 8 is 3, 7 times 5 is 35) gives the correct matches.
