Roman Numerals — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
We write 7 as VVII in Roman numerals.
Corrected: We write 7 as VII in Roman numerals.
V never repeats; we put V first and add up to three I marks after it.
2. Fix the sentence:
The Roman numeral XV means 5.
Corrected: The Roman numeral XV means 15.
When a smaller value follows a larger one, the values are added together.
3. Fix the sentence:
The number 11 in Roman form is VVI.
Corrected: The number 11 in Roman form is XI.
Eleven equals ten plus one, which is X followed by I, written as XI.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Convert XV to a regular number: 15.
X is ten and V is five, so XV equals fifteen by addition.
2. Write the number 8 as a Roman numeral: VIII.
Five plus three ones gives eight, written as V then III.
3. The Roman numeral XX equals 20.
Repeating X twice means ten plus ten, which equals twenty.
4. Write 13 in Roman numerals: XIII.
Ten plus three is thirteen, so we combine X with III to get XIII.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. Explain how to read the Roman numeral VII.
Sample answer: Start with V for five, then add two I marks to get five plus two equals seven.
Adding values left to right works whenever a smaller numeral follows a larger one.
2. How would you write 16 in Roman numerals?
Sample answer: Write XVI: ten plus five plus one equals sixteen using X, V, and I.
Breaking sixteen into ten, five, and one mirrors the order of Roman symbols.
