Roman Numerals — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. X + IX equals XIX.
Ten plus nine is nineteen, written XIX as X followed by IX in order.
2. XXV - VIII equals XVII.
Twenty-five minus eight is seventeen, written XVII as ten plus seven units.
3. Which is larger, XL or XC? Answer: XC.
Ninety is greater than forty, so XC is the larger Roman numeral by fifty.
4. Order from least to greatest: VI, XI, IV. Middle is VI.
Four is smallest and eleven is largest, leaving six in the middle position of three.
5. C - XXX equals LXX.
One hundred minus thirty is seventy, written LXX as fifty plus twenty in Roman form.
6. Super Bowl XXV was played in the year 1991.
The first Super Bowl was 1967, so the 25th game took place in early 1991 actually.
7. Compare: LX > XL. Use < or >.
Sixty is greater than forty, so LX is greater than XL by twenty units.
8. XIV + VI equals XX.
Fourteen plus six is twenty, written as XX, two tens combined into one.
9. Which is smallest: XII, IX, XV? Answer: IX.
IX equals 9, XII equals 12, and XV equals 15, so IX is least.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Super Bowl I
→ 1967
1967
Super Bowl XV
→ 1981
1981
Super Bowl XXX
→ 1996
1996
Super Bowl XL
→ 2006
2006
Each Super Bowl number is one more than the year minus 1966, so games run 1967, 1981, 1996, and 2006.
