Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
Ana planted 6 rows of tulips with 8 bulbs each. She planted 46 bulbs because 6 × 8 = 46.
Corrected: Ana planted 6 rows of tulips with 8 bulbs each. She planted 48 bulbs because 6 × 8 = 48.
6 × 8 = 48, not 46. You can double three times: 6 doubled is 12, doubled again is 24, doubled once more is 48.
2. Fix the sentence:
A gardener divided 84 seeds equally into 7 pots. Each pot got 11 seeds because 84 ÷ 7 = 11.
Corrected: A gardener divided 84 seeds equally into 7 pots. Each pot got 12 seeds because 84 ÷ 7 = 12.
84 ÷ 7 = 12, not 11. Check by multiplying back: 7 × 12 = 84, while 7 × 11 = 77.
3. Fix the sentence:
Sam watered 14 of the garden in the morning and 24 more in the afternoon. He watered 38 of the garden in all.
Corrected: Sam watered 14 of the garden in the morning and 24 more in the afternoon. He watered 34 of the garden in all.
When denominators are the same, only add the numerators: 14 + 24 = 34. The denominator stays as 4 because the pieces are still fourths.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A flower bed has 9 rows with 7 daffodils each. There are 63 daffodils in all.
9 × 7 = 63 daffodils. You can think (10 × 7) - 7 = 70 - 7 = 63.
2. A farmer plants 96 carrot seeds equally in 8 rows. Each row has 12 seeds.
96 ÷ 8 = 12. Split 96 into 80 + 16: 80 ÷ 8 = 10 and 16 ÷ 8 = 2, giving 10 + 2 = 12.
3. A rectangular garden is 12 ft long and 8 ft wide. Its perimeter is 40 feet.
Perimeter = 2 × (length + width) = 2 × (12 + 8) = 2 × 20 = 40 feet. Add all four sides: 12 + 12 + 8 + 8 = 40.
4. A flower pot holds 16 seeds and 34 of them sprout. That is 12 seeds.
First find 14 of 16: 16 ÷ 4 = 4. Then 34 means 3 × 4 = 12 seeds sprouted.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. A garden plot is 9 m long and 6 m wide. What is its area? Show your steps.
Sample answer: Step 1: Area = length × width. Step 2: 9 × 6 = 54 square meters.
Area of a rectangle is length times width. Multiplying gives 9 × 6 = 54 square meters, and area is always measured in square units.
2. The passage says "The tired seedlings stretched toward the sun." What can you infer about the seedlings? Explain.
Sample answer: I can infer the seedlings needed sunlight to grow. The word "stretched" suggests they were reaching for the light they needed.
An inference combines clues from the text with what you already know. Plants need sunlight, and 'stretched' tells you they were reaching for it.
