Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
A beekeeper collected 7 jars of honey from 9 hives each. He has 65 jars because 7 × 9 = 65.
Corrected: A beekeeper collected 7 jars of honey from 9 hives each. He has 63 jars because 7 × 9 = 63.
7 × 9 = 63, not 65. Use (7 × 10) - 7 = 70 - 7 = 63 to check quickly.
2. Fix the sentence:
A vegetable patch is 15 ft by 10 ft. Its perimeter is 48 feet because 15 + 15 + 10 + 10 = 48.
Corrected: A vegetable patch is 15 ft by 10 ft. Its perimeter is 50 feet because 15 + 15 + 10 + 10 = 50.
Adding all four sides gives 15 + 15 + 10 + 10 = 50 feet, not 48. You can also use 2 × (15 + 10) = 2 × 25 = 50.
3. Fix the sentence:
Lily bought 5 seed packets at $12 each and one trowel for $18. She spent $76 because 5 × 12 = 60 and 60 + 18 = 76.
Corrected: Lily bought 5 seed packets at $12 each and one trowel for $18. She spent $78 because 5 × 12 = 60 and 60 + 18 = 78.
5 × 12 = 60 is correct, but 60 + 18 = 78, not 76. Line up ones: 0 + 8 = 8, and 6 + 1 = 7.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Eight butterflies land on 11 flowers each. They visit 88 flowers total.
8 × 11 = 88. An easy trick for 11s: (8 × 10) + 8 = 80 + 8 = 88.
2. A nursery plants 132 tomato plants in 11 equal rows. Each row has 12 plants.
132 ÷ 11 = 12. Check: 11 × 12 = 132, from (10 × 12) + 12 = 120 + 12.
3. A rectangular garden is 9 m long and 7 m wide. Its area is 63 square meters.
Area = length × width = 9 × 7 = 63 square meters. Area is always in square units because you cover a 2D region.
4. A basket holds 24 strawberries and 12 of them are ripe. That is 12 strawberries.
To find 12 of 24, divide by 2: 24 ÷ 2 = 12 strawberries are ripe.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. A flower field has 7 rows with 15 tulips each. After 18 are picked, how many remain? Show your steps.
Sample answer: Step 1: 7 × 15 = 105 tulips total. Step 2: 105 − 18 = 87 tulips remain.
Multi-step problems: first multiply to find the total (7 × 15 = 105), then subtract the picked ones (105 - 18 = 87) to find what remains.
2. The story says "Birds sang loudly as the warm breeze swept across the meadow." What season is it likely to be? Explain.
Sample answer: It is likely spring. The warm breeze and singing birds are clues that suggest the weather has turned mild and life is returning outdoors.
Warm breezes and singing birds are signature spring clues. Readers use such sensory details to infer the season without being told directly.
