Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
A park ranger counted 8 nests with 5 eggs each. She found 42 eggs because 8 × 5 = 42.
Corrected: A park ranger counted 8 nests with 5 eggs each. She found 40 eggs because 8 × 5 = 40.
8 × 5 = 40, not 42. Since 5 × 8 is half of 10 × 8 = 80, the answer is 40.
2. Fix the sentence:
A florist arranged 108 daisies into 9 equal bouquets. Each bouquet has 11 daisies because 108 ÷ 9 = 11.
Corrected: A florist arranged 108 daisies into 9 equal bouquets. Each bouquet has 12 daisies because 108 ÷ 9 = 12.
108 ÷ 9 = 12, not 11. Check: 9 × 12 = 108, while 9 × 11 = 99.
3. Fix the sentence:
Mia walked 38 of the trail before lunch and 28 after lunch. She walked 516 of the trail in all.
Corrected: Mia walked 38 of the trail before lunch and 28 after lunch. She walked 58 of the trail in all.
When denominators match, add only the numerators: 38 + 28 = 58. You never double the denominator when adding like fractions.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A robin flies 14 miles each day for 6 days. It flies 84 miles in all.
6 × 14 = 84. Split as (6 × 10) + (6 × 4) = 60 + 24 = 84.
2. A garden center divides 156 seedlings equally among 12 trays. Each tray holds 13 seedlings.
156 ÷ 12 = 13. Check: 12 × 13 = 156, from (12 × 10) + (12 × 3) = 120 + 36.
3. A rectangular birdhouse floor is 8 inches long and 6 inches wide. Its area is 48 square inches.
Area = length × width = 8 × 6 = 48 square inches. Area measures flat space, so use square units.
4. A nest holds 20 eggs and 35 of them hatch. That is 12 chicks.
First find 15 of 20: 20 ÷ 5 = 4. Then 35 means 3 × 4 = 12 chicks hatched.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. A park has 6 bird feeders. Each feeder holds 18 ounces of seed. If all feeders are half full, how many ounces of seed remain? Show your steps.
Sample answer: Step 1: Total capacity is 6 × 18 = 108 ounces. Step 2: Half full means 108 ÷ 2 = 54 ounces remain.
Find the full capacity first with multiplication (6 × 18 = 108), then take half by dividing by 2 to get 54 ounces remaining.
2. The passage says "Tiny green shoots pushed through the dark soil as the days grew longer." What season does this describe? How do you know?
Sample answer: This describes spring. The clues are green shoots growing and the days getting longer, which happen when winter ends and spring begins.
New plant growth and longer daylight hours are both classic signs of spring. Readers combine these clues to identify the season.
