Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. Ben buys 7 bags of mulch at $18 each and pays with $200. What is his change?
A) $64
B) $74
C) $84
D) $94
First multiply: 7 × $18 = $126. Then subtract: $200 - $126 = $74 in change.
2. The passage says "Jane slipped off her jacket as warm sunlight filled the yard and robins chirped nearby." What can you infer?
A) It is early winter.
B) It is a cold night.
C) Spring has arrived.
D) It is raining hard.
Warm sunlight and chirping robins are classic spring clues. Taking off a jacket also suggests the weather has warmed up.
3. A garden has 48 roses and 34 of them are red. How many roses are red?
A) 32
B) 34
C) 36
D) 38
Find 14 of 48 first: 48 ÷ 4 = 12. Then 34 means 3 × 12 = 36 red roses.
4. A rectangular flower bed is 15 ft long and 12 ft wide. What is its area in square feet?
A) 54
B) 150
C) 180
D) 192
Area = length × width = 15 × 12 = 180 square feet. Split as (15 × 10) + (15 × 2) = 150 + 30.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. A shop sells 8 seed trays at $22 each and one hose for $24. Total revenue is $200.
Trays: 8 × $22 = $176. Total: $176 + $24 = $200.
2. A farmer plants 225 seeds equally into 9 rows. Each row gets 25 seeds.
225 ÷ 9 = 25. Check: 9 × 25 = 225, from (9 × 20) + (9 × 5) = 180 + 45.
3. Using story clues and your own knowledge to understand the text is called making an inference.
An inference connects clues in the text with what you already know to figure out meaning the author didn't state directly.
4. A gardener has 35 bulbs and plants 25 of them. That is 14 bulbs.
First find 15 of 35: 35 ÷ 5 = 7. Then 25 means 2 × 7 = 14 bulbs.
5. A rectangular garden is 25 ft by 18 ft. Its perimeter is 86 feet.
Perimeter = 2 × (25 + 18) = 2 × 43 = 86 feet. You can also add all four sides: 25 + 25 + 18 + 18 = 86.
