Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. A nature center has 9 tanks with 16 tadpoles each. After 38 become frogs, how many tadpoles remain?
A) 96
B) 102
C) 106
D) 110
Total tadpoles: 9 × 16 = 144. Subtract the ones that became frogs: 144 - 38 = 106.
2. The passage says "The bear emerged from its den, blinking in the bright sunlight as it sniffed the fresh spring air." What can you infer?
A) The bear is preparing for winter.
B) The bear just woke from hibernation.
C) The bear is looking for a new den.
D) The bear is lost in the woods.
Bears hibernate all winter in dens, and 'spring air' is the clue that winter just ended. Emerging and blinking also suggest waking up.
3. A butterfly garden is 22 ft long and 8 ft wide. What is its area in square feet?
A) 60
B) 150
C) 168
D) 176
Area = 22 × 8 = 176 square feet. Split as (20 × 8) + (2 × 8) = 160 + 16 = 176.
4. A pond has 72 fish and 58 of them are goldfish. How many goldfish are there?
A) 36
B) 40
C) 45
D) 48
First find 18 of 72: 72 ÷ 8 = 9. Then 58 means 5 × 9 = 45 goldfish.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. A zoo buys 7 bags of birdseed at $19 each and a feeder for $17. The total cost is $150.
Seed bags: 7 × $19 = $133. Total: $133 + $17 = $150.
2. A beekeeper divides 252 bees equally into 7 hives. Each hive gets 36 bees.
252 ÷ 7 = 36. Check: 7 × 36 = 252, from (7 × 30) + (7 × 6) = 210 + 42.
3. A word or phrase that means the opposite of another word is called an antonym.
Antonyms are opposite words, like hot and cold. The prefix 'anti-' or 'ant-' means 'against' or 'opposite'.
4. A rectangular duck pond is 19 ft by 11 ft. Its area is 209 square feet.
Area = 19 × 11 = 209 square feet. Split as (19 × 10) + 19 = 190 + 19 = 209.
5. A gardener has 56 tulips and plants 37 of them. She plants 24 tulips.
First find 17 of 56: 56 ÷ 7 = 8. Then 37 means 3 × 8 = 24 tulips.
