Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A garden store sells 8 rose bushes at $14 each. Total sales are $112.
8 × $14 = $112. Split as (8 × 10) + (8 × 4) = 80 + 32 = 112.
2. The part of a plant that anchors it in the soil is called the root.
Roots hold a plant in the ground and absorb water and nutrients from the soil. They act like anchors below the surface.
3. Seven planters hold 18 seedlings each. There are 126 seedlings total.
7 × 18 = 126. Split as (7 × 20) - (7 × 2) = 140 - 14 = 126.
4. Clues in a story that help readers guess what happens next are called hints.
Hints are small clues an author plants in a story to help readers predict what will happen next. They guide careful reading.
5. A farmer places 144 seeds equally into 12 trays. Each tray has 12 seeds.
144 ÷ 12 = 12. This is a square number worth memorizing: 12 × 12 = 144.
6. A guess based on clues and background knowledge is called an inference.
An inference combines text clues with what you already know to figure out something the author didn't state directly.
7. A rectangular yard is 20 ft by 15 ft. Its perimeter is 70 feet.
Perimeter = 2 × (20 + 15) = 2 × 35 = 70 feet. Adding all four sides also works: 20 + 20 + 15 + 15 = 70.
8. The process plants use to make food from sunlight is called photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis combines 'photo' (light) and 'synthesis' (putting together). Plants use sunlight, water, and air to build food for themselves.
9. A farmer has 27 seed packets and uses 13 of them. That is 9 packets.
To find 13 of 27, divide by 3: 27 ÷ 3 = 9 packets used.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
stem
→ part that carries water up the plant
part that absorbs water from the soil
leaf
→ part that catches sunlight for food
part where pollination takes place
root
→ part that absorbs water from the soil
part that carries water up the plant
flower
→ part where pollination takes place
part that catches sunlight for food
Each plant part has a unique job: stems transport water, leaves capture sunlight for photosynthesis, roots absorb water, and flowers enable pollination and reproduction.
