Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A birdwatcher spots 7 flocks with 13 birds each. She counts 91 birds total.
7 × 13 = 91. Split as (7 × 10) + (7 × 3) = 70 + 21 = 91.
2. The place where a story happens is called the setting.
Setting covers both the WHERE (place) and WHEN (time) of a story. It helps readers picture the scene.
3. A wildlife center shares 192 fish equally among 8 ponds. Each pond gets 24 fish.
192 ÷ 8 = 24. Split 192 into 160 + 32: 160 ÷ 8 = 20 and 32 ÷ 8 = 4, giving 20 + 4 = 24.
4. When a character in a story changes from start to end, that change is called character development.
Character development is how a character grows or changes through a story's events. A dynamic character changes; a static one stays the same.
5. A rectangular butterfly garden is 16 ft by 11 ft. Its area is 176 square feet.
Area = 16 × 11 = 176 square feet. Use (16 × 10) + 16 = 160 + 16 = 176.
6. Words that describe how something looks, sounds, or feels are called sensory details.
Sensory details appeal to the five senses — sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. They help readers imagine a scene clearly.
7. A farmer collects 12 baskets with 15 strawberries each. She collects 180 strawberries.
12 × 15 = 180. Split as (12 × 10) + (12 × 5) = 120 + 60 = 180.
8. A pond has 45 tadpoles and 25 of them become frogs. That is 18 frogs.
First find 15 of 45: 45 ÷ 5 = 9. Then 25 means 2 × 9 = 18 frogs.
9. Six bird feeders hold 24 ounces of seed each. They hold 144 ounces in all.
6 × 24 = 144. Split as (6 × 20) + (6 × 4) = 120 + 24 = 144.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
migration
→ animals traveling long distances each season
a deep sleep animals enter during winter
hibernation
→ a deep sleep animals enter during winter
a change in body form such as caterpillar to butterfly
pollination
→ moving pollen from one flower to another
moving pollen from one flower to another
metamorphosis
→ a change in body form such as caterpillar to butterfly
animals traveling long distances each season
Each term names a specific animal or plant behavior: migration is seasonal travel, hibernation is winter sleep, pollination moves pollen, and metamorphosis changes body form.
