Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A weather station records 8 storms in March with 14 inches of rain each. Total rainfall is 112 inches.
8 × 14 = 112. Split as (8 × 10) + (8 × 4) = 80 + 32 = 112.
2. A person who tells the story is called the narrator.
The narrator is the voice telling the story. They may be a character in the story or an outside observer.
3. A class divides 176 raindrops equally on 11 posters. Each poster shows 16 raindrops.
176 ÷ 11 = 16. Check: 11 × 16 = 176, from (10 × 16) + 16 = 160 + 16.
4. Comparing two things using "like" or "as" is a figure of speech called a simile.
A simile uses 'like' or 'as' to compare two different things, like 'cold as ice' or 'fast like a cheetah'.
5. A rectangular rain garden is 18 ft by 14 ft. Its perimeter is 64 feet.
Perimeter = 2 × (18 + 14) = 2 × 32 = 64 feet. You can also add all four sides: 18 + 18 + 14 + 14 = 64.
6. The problem a character faces in a story is called the conflict.
Conflict is the main struggle that drives a story forward. It can be between characters, or between a character and nature or themselves.
7. A farmer buys 9 umbrellas at $17 each. She spends $153 total.
9 × $17 = $153. Split as (9 × 20) - (9 × 3) = 180 - 27 = 153.
8. A barrel holds 60 gallons and 34 of it is full. That is 45 gallons.
First find 14 of 60: 60 ÷ 4 = 15. Then 34 means 3 × 15 = 45 gallons.
9. Seven rain gauges each measured 19 centimeters. Together they measured 133 centimeters.
7 × 19 = 133. Use (7 × 20) - 7 = 140 - 7 = 133.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
drizzle

thunder
→ a loud rumbling sound during a storm
an arc of colors caused by sunlight and rain
rainbow
→ an arc of colors caused by sunlight and rain
a loud rumbling sound during a storm
