Summer Review Sheets — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
A camper filled 8 bags with 9 seashells each. She has 74 seashells because 8 × 9 = 74.
Corrected: A camper filled 8 bags with 9 seashells each. She has 72 seashells because 8 × 9 = 72.
Eight groups of nine is 8 x 9 = 72, not 74, so the camper has 72 seashells in her bags.
2. Fix the sentence:
Jake ate 25 of a pizza and his sister ate 15 more. Together they ate 310 of the pizza.
Corrected: Jake ate 25 of a pizza and his sister ate 15 more. Together they ate 35 of the pizza.
Adding fractions with the same denominator keeps the denominator the same and adds only the numerators: 25 + 15 = 35.
3. Fix the sentence:
Mia bought 7 beach toys at $12 each and a hat for $16. She spent $98 because 7 × 12 = 84 and 84 + 16 = 98.
Corrected: Mia bought 7 beach toys at $12 each and a hat for $16. She spent $100 because 7 × 12 = 84 and 84 + 16 = 100.
Seven toys at $12 each is 7 x 12 = 84, then adding the $16 hat gives 84 + 16 = 100, so Mia spent $100 in all.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Nine sandcastles have 8 towers each. There are 72 towers in all.
Nine sandcastles each having 8 towers is a multiplication: 9 x 8 = 72 towers altogether.
2. A pool has 120 swim noodles arranged in 10 equal rows. Each row has 12 noodles.
Arranging 120 noodles in 10 equal rows means 120 / 10 = 12 noodles per row.
3. Sara drank 0.5 L of water and 0.5 L of juice. She drank 1 L in total.
Adding 0.5 and 0.5 gives 1 whole liter, since two halves combine to make one.
4. A cooler holds 20 ice pops and 34 of them are red. That is 15 red pops.
Three-fourths of 20 is found by 20 / 4 = 5 and then 5 x 3 = 15, so 15 of the ice pops are red.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. A summer camp has 6 cabins with 14 kids each. After 12 kids leave, how many remain? Show your steps.
Sample answer: Step 1: 6 × 14 = 84 kids total. Step 2: 84 − 12 = 72 kids remain.
Multiply first to find the total kids: 6 x 14 = 84. Then subtract the 12 who left: 84 - 12 = 72 kids remain.
2. In a summer story, the narrator says "I could not wait to jump into the cool blue pool." What does this tell you about the weather? Explain.
Sample answer: It tells me the weather is very hot. The narrator wants to jump into the cool water to escape the summer heat.
Wanting to jump into a cool pool to feel relief is a clue that the outdoor weather is hot, which is what summer feels like.
