Winter Holiday Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A hot cocoa recipe uses 26 cup of cocoa and 36 cup of milk. Total: 56 cup.
Add numerators when denominators match: 26 + 36 = 56.
2. A snowflake is 0.25 cm wide. Another is 0.75 cm wide. Together: 1 cm.
0.25 + 0.75 = 1.00 = 1 cm. Twenty-five hundredths plus seventy-five hundredths equals one whole.
3. Kate ate 710 of a cake and gave 310 to friends. She had 410 of the cake from her share.
Subtract: 710 - 310 = 410 of the cake left after giving some to friends.
4. The most important point of a reading passage is called its main idea.
The main idea is the most important point the author wants to share. Every other sentence supports it with details.
5. A Christmas tree is 4 feet tall. That equals 48 inches.
There are 12 inches in every foot, so 4 × 12 = 48 inches.
6. Six snow globes cost $9 each. The total is $54.
6 × $9 = $54. Use (6 × 10) - 6 = 60 - 6 = 54.
7. A reindeer ran 2.5 km, then 1.5 km more. Total distance: 4 km.
2.5 + 1.5 = 4.0 = 4 km. Five tenths plus five tenths equals one whole, added to 2 + 1 = 3, giving 4.
8. A classroom has 20 students. If 34 made snowmen, 15 students made snowmen.
First find 14 of 20: 20 ÷ 4 = 5. Then 34 means 3 × 5 = 15 students.
9. A winter scarf is 3 yards long. That equals 9 feet.
There are 3 feet in every yard, so 3 × 3 = 9 feet.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
12 inches
→ 1 foot
72 inches
2 feet
→ 24 inches
1 yard
3 feet
→ 1 yard
1 foot
36 inches
→ 72 inches
24 inches
Use the conversion rules: 12 inches equal 1 foot, 2 feet equal 24 inches (since 2 × 12 = 24), and 3 feet equal 1 yard. Match each measurement to its equivalent.
