Winter Holiday Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A recipe calls for 38 cup of sugar and 48 cup of flour. Total dry mix: 78 cup.
Add numerators when denominators match: 38 + 48 = 78.
2. A snowball weighs 1.75 pounds. Another weighs 2.25 pounds. Combined weight: 4 pounds.
1.75 + 2.25 = 4.00 = 4 pounds. Seventy-five hundredths plus twenty-five hundredths equals one whole.
3. Kim had 910 of a bag of candy. She gave 410 to friends. She kept 510 of the bag.
Subtract numerators: 910 - 410 = 510 kept.
4. Details that help prove the main idea of a passage are called supporting details.
Supporting details back up the main idea with facts, examples, or descriptions. They help the reader understand the big point.
5. A frozen pond is 8 feet wide. That equals 96 inches.
There are 12 inches in every foot, so 8 × 12 = 96 inches.
6. Seven sleds cost $11 each. The total is $77.
7 × $11 = $77. Use (7 × 10) + 7 = 70 + 7 = 77.
7. A polar bear walked 3.6 km, then rested, then walked 2.4 km more. Total distance: 6 km.
3.6 + 2.4 = 6.0 = 6 km. Six tenths plus four tenths equals one whole, added to 3 + 2 = 5, giving 6.
8. A school has 30 students. If 25 wore mittens, 12 students wore mittens.
First find 15 of 30: 30 ÷ 5 = 6. Then 25 means 2 × 6 = 12 students.
9. A holiday parade route is 2 miles. That equals 10560 feet.
There are 5,280 feet in 1 mile, so 2 × 5,280 = 10,560 feet.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
sleet
→ ice pellets that fall from the sky
a mass of snow sliding down a mountain
avalanche
→ a mass of snow sliding down a mountain
how cold it feels when wind blows on skin
frost
→ thin ice crystals that form on cold surfaces
ice pellets that fall from the sky
windchill
→ how cold it feels when wind blows on skin
thin ice crystals that form on cold surfaces
Each cold-weather word names a distinct phenomenon: sleet is ice pellets, an avalanche is sliding snow, frost is thin ice crystals, and windchill is the feel of cold wind.
