Roots, Prefixes & Suffixes — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The Latin root port means "to carry," so to import goods means to carry them into a country.
The root 'port' (carry) combines with 'im-' (in) to form 'import' — to carry goods in. Similarly, 'export' means to carry goods out.
2. A portable device is one that is easy to carry from place to place.
'Portable' contains the root 'port' (carry) + '-able' (can be). Something portable can be carried. Other 'port' words: transport, report, portfolio.
3. The Latin root rupt means "to break," so a volcanic eruption is a sudden breaking forth of lava.
'Eruption' contains 'e-' (out) + 'rupt' (break) + '-ion' (act of). An eruption is when a volcano breaks open and material bursts out.
4. When you interrupt someone who is speaking, you break into their conversation.
'Interrupt' contains 'inter-' (between) + 'rupt' (break). To interrupt is to break in between someone's speech or action.
5. The Latin root vis means "to see," so something visible can be seen with your eyes.
'Visible' contains 'vis' (see) + '-ible' (able to be). Something visible is able to be seen. Related words: vision, invisible, visual.
6. A person with excellent vision can see things clearly from far away.
'Vision' contains 'vis' (see) + '-ion' (act of). It refers to sight or a mental image. Other 'vis' words: visible, visual, revise, television.
7. The Latin root aud means "to hear," so an audience is a group of people who listen to a performance.
'Audience' contains 'aud' (hear). An audience is a group that listens to and watches a performance. Other 'aud' words: audio, audible, auditorium.
8. If a sound is audible, it is loud enough to be heard by everyone in the room.
'Audible' contains 'aud' (hear) + '-ible' (able to be). Something audible can be heard. Its opposite, 'inaudible,' means not able to be heard.
9. To export means to carry goods out of a country to sell them somewhere else.
'Export' contains 'ex-' (out) + 'port' (carry). To export is to carry goods out of a country. The opposite is 'import' (carry in).
