Spelling Grade 5 — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
becuase
Corrected: because
The word because follows the c-a-u-s-e ending, not the c-u-a-s-e order.
2. Fix the sentence:
freind
Corrected: friend
Friend follows the standard i-before-e rule, giving us the spelling f-r-i-e-n-d.
3. Fix the sentence:
libary
Corrected: library
Library has two r sounds and must include the r before the a clearly.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. I went to the library to borrow three new books.
Library is spelled l-i-b-r-a-r-y with two r sounds always included.
2. My best friend helped me finish the science project.
Friend follows the i-before-e rule and ends in the letters n-d.
3. We ate dinner at a fancy restaurant on Saturday night.
Restaurant has a silent letter pattern: r-e-s-t-a-u-r-a-n-t with hidden vowels.
4. I am tired because I stayed up reading too late.
Because uses c-a-u-s-e at the end, not the c-u-a-s-e ordering.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. Write a sentence using the word tomorrow correctly.
Sample answer: Tomorrow our class will visit the museum on a field trip.
Tomorrow is commonly misspelled with two m's; remember it has only one.
2. Why is the word government tricky to spell?
Sample answer: Government is tricky because the n in the middle is often silent when spoken.
Government keeps a silent n that many Grade 5 students drop when writing.
