Spelling Grade 5 — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
I scraped my nee on the sidewalk.
Corrected: I scraped my knee on the sidewalk.
Knee begins with a silent k from Old English roots; nee is missing the silent letter.
2. Fix the sentence:
Please rite your name at the top.
Corrected: Please write your name at the top.
Write begins with a silent w; rite is a different word meaning a ceremony.
3. Fix the sentence:
I gave her good advise about the test.
Corrected: I gave her good advice about the test.
Advice with -ce is the noun; advise with -se is the verb meaning to recommend.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The knight chased the mouse around the kitchen.
Wait, use the silent-letter word for a warrior on horseback; knight starts with silent k and gh.
2. A small gnome lived under the toadstool in the story.
Gnome starts with a silent g, a Greek-rooted spelling pattern Grade 5 students learn.
3. Please write a thank-you note to your aunt.
Write means to put words on paper and starts with the silent w common in Old English.
4. She gave me good advice before the big game.
Advice ends in -ce as a noun; the verb advise ends in -se with a z sound.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. Write the word that means a sharp tool used for cutting food.
Sample answer: knife
Knife has a silent k and is a common silent-letter word reviewed in Grade 5.
2. Use the word license in a complete sentence.
Sample answer: My uncle keeps his fishing license in his wallet.
License is one of those tricky -se words that does not follow the -ce noun pattern.
