Coordinate Plane — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (5, 1), and (3, 5). The base along the bottom is 4 units long.
The base connects (1,1) and (5,1), both on y=1. Length = |5 − 1| = 4 units.
2. A pattern starts at (1, 2) and each point moves 2 units right. The third point is at (5, 2).
Starting at x=1, moving 2 right gives x=3 (2nd point), then x=5 (3rd point). y stays at 2. Third point: (5, 2).
3. Points are plotted at (1, 1), (2, 2), (3, 3), and (4, 4). The next point in the pattern is (5, 5).
The pattern increases both x and y by 1 each time. After (4, 4), the next point is (5, 5).
4. A path goes from (0, 0) to (3, 0) to (3, 4). The total distance traveled is 7 units.
First segment (0,0)→(3,0): 3 units. Second segment (3,0)→(3,4): 4 units. Total = 3 + 4 = 7 units.
5. A shape has corners at (2, 1), (6, 1), (6, 3), and (2, 3). This shape is a rectangle.
The width is |6−2|=4 units and the height is |3−1|=2 units. Four right angles and two pairs of equal sides → rectangle.
6. Points at (1, 3), (3, 3), (5, 3), and (7, 3) all share the same y-coordinate.
All four points have y = 3. Points sharing the same y-coordinate lie on a horizontal line.
7. A pattern starts at (0, 1) and moves 1 right and 2 up each step. The second point is at (1, 3).
From (0,1): move 1 right → x=1; move 2 up → y=3. Second point: (1, 3).
8. Using the same pattern, the third point is at (2, 5).
From (1,3): move 1 right → x=2; move 2 up → y=5. Third point: (2, 5).
9. A square on the grid has corners at (3, 2), (7, 2), (7, 6), and (3, 6). Its area is 16 square units.
Side length = |7−3| = 4 units. Area = 4 × 4 = 16 square units.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Points (1,2), (2,4), (3,6) follow the rule: y =
→ 2 times x
(4, 5) and (1, 5)
A horizontal line through y = 5 passes through
→ (4, 5) and (1, 5)
square
Shape with 4 equal sides and 4 right angles
→ square
(3, 0)
Point exactly halfway between (0, 0) and (6, 0)
→ (3, 0)
2 times x
y=2x rule (1→2, 2→4, 3→6); y=5 line passes through any point where y=5; 4 equal sides + right angles = square; halfway between 0 and 6 is x=3 → (3,0).
