Coordinate Plane — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A point at (2, 3) moves 4 units right. Its new position is (6, 3).
Moving right increases the x-coordinate, so add 4 to the starting x-value: 2 + 4 = 6. The y stays at 3.
2. A point at (5, 1) moves 6 units up. Its new position is (5, 7).
Moving up increases the y-coordinate, so add 6 to the starting y-value: 1 + 6 = 7. The x stays at 5.
3. A point at (3, 7) moves 3 units left. Its new position is (0, 7).
Moving left decreases the x-coordinate, so subtract: 3 - 3 = 0. The y stays at 7.
4. A point at (4, 8) moves 5 units down. Its new position is (4, 3).
Moving down decreases the y-coordinate, so subtract: 8 - 5 = 3. The x stays at 4.
5. A point starts at (1, 2) and moves 3 right and 4 up. Its new position is (4, 6).
Add 3 to the x-coordinate: 1 + 3 = 4. Add 4 to the y-coordinate: 2 + 4 = 6. The new position is (4, 6).
6. A point at (6, 5) moves 2 left and 3 down. Its new position is (4, 2).
Subtract 2 from the x-coordinate: 6 - 2 = 4. Subtract 3 from the y-coordinate: 5 - 3 = 2. The new position is (4, 2).
7. After moving 5 units right from (0, 4), the x-coordinate changes to 5.
Moving right adds to the x-coordinate: 0 + 5 = 5. The y-coordinate is not affected by horizontal movement.
8. A point moves from (3, 1) to (3, 9). It moved 8 units in the up direction.
The x-coordinates are the same (both 3), so the point only moved vertically. Subtract the y-values: 9 - 1 = 8 units up.
9. A point moves from (7, 4) to (2, 4). It moved 5 units to the left.
The y-coordinates are the same (both 4), so the point moved only horizontally. Subtract the x-values: 7 - 2 = 5 units to the left.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each starting point and movement to the correct ending point.
(1, 2) moves 3 right and 5 up
→ (4, 7)
(4, 5)
(6, 1) moves 2 left and 4 up
→ (4, 5)
(7, 3)
(0, 3) moves 7 right and 0 up
→ (7, 3)
(0, 5)
(5, 8) moves 5 left and 3 down
→ (0, 5)
(4, 7)
Correct matches: (1, 2) moves 3 right and 5 up → (4, 7); (6, 1) moves 2 left and 4 up → (4, 5); (0, 3) moves 7 right and 0 up → (7, 3); (5, 8) moves 5 left and 3 down → (0, 5).
