Students fix three interpretation errors — equal group counts described as unequal, data point count confused with total value, and a comparison count off by two. Part B has four questions about totals, differences, and frequency counts from fraction line plots. Part C has two questions comparing groups and finding total data values.

Interpreting fraction line plots correctly — including 'more than,' 'or less,' and 'total value' questions — builds the reading precision students need for multi-step data analysis.

★ Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1) Fix the sentence:
A line plot shows plant heights: 1/4→3 Xs, 1/2→2 Xs, 3/4→4 Xs, 1→1 X. A student says more plants are 1/2 foot or shorter than taller. Shorter: 5. Taller: 5.
Rewrite: Plants 1/2 foot or shorter: 1/4(3)+1/2(2)=5. Plants taller: 3/4(4)+1(1)=5. The counts are equal, not "more shorter."
2) Fix the sentence:
A line plot shows snowfall in inches: 1/4→5 Xs, 1/2→3 Xs, 3/4→2 Xs. A student says the total snowfall across all days is 10 inches.
Rewrite: The total number of days is 10, but total snowfall is (5×1/4)+(3×1/2)+(2×3/4)=5/4+6/4+6/4=17/4=4 1/4 inches.
3) Fix the sentence:
A line plot shows trail lengths in miles: 1/8→2 Xs, 3/8→4 Xs, 5/8→3 Xs, 7/8→1 X. A student says 6 trails are longer than 2/8 mile.
Rewrite: Trails longer than 2/8 mile: 3/8(4)+5/8(3)+7/8(1) = 4+3+1 = 8 trails, not 6.
★ Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1) A line plot shows hours spent reading: 1/4→4 Xs, 1/2→7 Xs, 3/4→3 Xs, 1→2 Xs. The number of students who read 1/2 hour or more is 12.
2) A line plot shows hours spent reading: 1/4→4 Xs, 1/2→7 Xs, 3/4→3 Xs, 1→2 Xs. The difference between the most common and least common X mark counts is 5.
3) A line plot shows distances walked in miles: 1/8→1 X, 2/8→3 Xs, 3/8→5 Xs, 4/8→2 Xs. How many of the 11 walkers walked exactly 3/8 mile? Answer: 5.
4) A line plot shows distances walked in miles: 1/8→1 X, 2/8→3 Xs, 3/8→5 Xs, 4/8→2 Xs. The number of walkers who walked less than 3/8 mile is 4.
★ Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1) A line plot shows apple weights in pounds: 1/4→3 Xs, 1/2→5 Xs, 3/4→4 Xs, 1→2 Xs. How many apples weigh more than 1/2 pound? How many weigh 1/2 pound or less? Which group is larger?
More than 1/2 pound: 3/4(4)+1(2)=6 apples. At 1/2 pound or less: 1/4(3)+1/2(5)=8 apples. The 1/2 pound or less group is larger.
2) A line plot shows milk used in cups: 1/4→2 Xs, 1/2→4 Xs, 3/4→3 Xs, 1→1 X. What is the total amount of milk used across all recipes? Show your work.
Multiply each value by its count and add: (2×1/4)+(4×1/2)+(3×3/4)+(1×1) = 2/4+8/4+9/4+4/4 = 23/4 = 5 3/4 cups total.
