Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
A witch has 34 lb of candy corn and 112 lbs of chocolate, so she has 134 lbs total.
Corrected: A witch has 34 lb of candy corn and 112 lbs of chocolate, so she has 214 lbs total.
The corrected sentence is: "A witch has 34 lb of candy corn and 112 lbs of chocolate, so she has 214 lbs total.". The original sentence "A witch has 34 lb of candy corn and 112 lbs of chocolate, so she has 134 lbs total." contained an error that needed to be fixed.
2. Fix the sentence:
A haunted house earned $287.50 from tickets at $5.75 each, so 45 people visited.
Corrected: A haunted house earned $287.50 from tickets at $5.75 each, so 50 people visited.
The corrected sentence is: "A haunted house earned $287.50 from tickets at $5.75 each, so 50 people visited.". The original sentence "A haunted house earned $287.50 from tickets at $5.75 each, so 45 people visited." contained an error that needed to be fixed.

Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A fraction with different top and bottom numbers like 34 is called a proper fraction.
A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than the denominator, like 34.
2. Moving a decimal point one place to the right is the same as multiplying by 10.
Shifting the decimal one place right multiplies the value by 10.
3. To add 13 and 14, you first find a common denominator.
To add fractions with unlike denominators, find the least common denominator (LCD). For 13 and 14, LCD=12.
4. The answer to a division problem is called the quotient.
In a division problem: dividend ÷ divisor = quotient.
Part C: Short Answer
Answer each question in one or two complete sentences.
1. A ghost collected 35 of a bag of candy on Elm Street and 23 of a bag on Oak Street. How much candy total? Show your work.
Sample answer: Find a common denominator: 35 = 915 and 23 = 1015. Then 915 + 1015 = 1915 = 1415 bags of candy.
LCD of 5 and 3 is 15. Convert and add: 915 + 1015 = 1915 = 1415.
2. Each trick-or-treater gets 0.75 lbs of candy. If there are 24 trick-or-treaters, how many pounds of candy are needed?
Sample answer: Multiply 24 × 0.75. 24 × 0.75 = 18 pounds of candy are needed.
24 × 0.75 = 24 × 34 = 18.
